James’ own love of medieval studies is reflected in the settings of his tales, which have been adapted regularly for BBC radio and television, often to coincide with Christmas.

The graphic novel features; Number 13, illustrated by Greece-based George Kambadais (Short Order Crooks), tells the story of a Danish historian whose research is disrupted by the mysterious occupant of a hotel room. Count Magnus, illustrated by Abigail Larson, recounts the haunting tale of a travel writer who is obsessed with uncovering the dark secrets of the Count’s mausoleum. The Treasure of Abbot Thomas, illustrated by Meghan Hetrick, whose work has appeared in Marvel and Vertigo titles, tells of an expedition to discover the Abbot’s hidden gold. Oh, Whistle And I will Come To You, My Lad, illustrated by Al Davison (The Spiral Cage), brings to life James’s best-known story. This story about an ancient curse has been adapted twice for BBC TV.
