In a one off charity fundraising event, Chennai Challenge presents a screening of the original 1931 version of Frankenstein, directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff in the chilling cult film. Join them on Monday 18th July at the Screen on the Green in Highbury for your chance to settle down in the dark and witness the horror on the big screen and all for a very very good cause.
Set up in 2005 by Rob Short, Cathy Short and Isaac Jones, Chennai Challenge was born out of a Guildford YMCA project originating in 1990. When the YMCA stopped visiting Chennai in 2006 Chennai Challenge became an independent charity and a partner with Madras YMCA.
They currently work with Madras YMCA and Oasis India; both of whom run projects in some of the poorest parts of the city with an aim to help facilitate the work they do by providing funds for projects that might be outside of their financial capability. So far they have succeeded in providing a Water Filtration System at the YMCA Boys Town, a home for orphaned and disadvantaged boys, renovating a dilapidated Community Centre and building a new toilet block for girls at a Higher Secondary School among other things.
Every year they immerse a team of up to 20 young people aged 16 and above in real life South Indian culture, challenging them to work on the front line alongside local leaders tackling poverty in Chennai with 2 ½ weeks abroad helping make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate.
Doors open for the charity screening at 8.30pm with a short introduction to the film followed by the iconic movie itself. There is also a prize draw so stick around afterwards to find out if you’ve won a prize which could be anything from theater tickets to original artwork and celebrity signed merchandise. It’s all in the name of charity with all proceeds going directly to the work of Chennai Challenge.
Frankenstein is on on Monday 18th July. Tickets for the event are priced at £10, to apply email [email protected] and he’ll send you instructions. The £10 includes one free entry to the draw but further entries can be purchased for £1 each.
