Depraved Monsters of the Big Screen

Brutality, identity, torment: the mind of a depraved killer. A look at the most fascinating
screen killers that make up the greatest and most influential horror films today. Perhaps the
only common feature is the fact they kill.

Dating back to the 1960’s, Psycho delves intothe psychological depths of the human mind, questioning its capabilities.
With no distinct killer recognition, Psycho makes for a disturbing and somewhat unexpected narrative.
More comparable films to the up and coming release of The Collector include Nightmare on Elm
Street
, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Friday the 13th. The inexorable
killers sustain a masked identity reflecting their inhuman nature.
Originally released in 1984 fictional character Freddy Krueger made A Nightmare on Elm
Street
genuinely terrifying. Sleep is a basic human need, often the only time we feel safe and can rest. But what happens when falling
asleep becomes lethal. Krueger’s disfigured identity and merciless hands torment victims with
what only feels like reality.
One of the most brutal killers on the big screen would be Leatherface from 1974’sThe Texas
Chain Saw Massacre
. The film is powered by raw visuals reflecting the gory homicides
committed by a demented family of cannibalistic psychopaths.
Leatherface’s use of power tools to torment victims is disturbing enough, but the most terriying act is during the family dinner scene whereby
he invites a victim to dine with his kin. Of course, the victim themself is the one on the menu. The Texas Chain Saw
Massacre
remains one of the most shocking films within the horror genre.

You may be wondering how these characters become inexorable killers. Saw’s Jigsaw is
cancer-infested, on the brink of death and striving to make other see the value of life when
faced with death. The Shinning (1980) looks at a father’s insanity as a result of cabin fever
after moving into a ghostly hotel. Friday the 13th (2009) is based on a mother’s revenge after
her son drowns at a summer camp. All set the scene for unimaginable horror and encounter
a factor of realism.

The Collector – out in cinemas Friday 25th June can be seen to encapsulate elements of these classic
horrors.
The masked killer carefully selects and tortures a family by keeping them locked in
a house. When an intruder enters the house, reality strikes that he is not the only criminal.
This visually disturbing and utterly horrific film adds yet another depraved villain to the horror
genre.
