5 Horror Films for a Snowy Day

We’ve seen it all before. Some unexpectedly heavy snow falls and all of a sudden, our world comes to a standstill.

Tracks freeze making trains useless, roads close leaving drivers stranded, and runways become too hazardous for planes to use.
It’s on days like this when you need to forget about leaving the house, wrap yourself up warm and find something comforting to do. Like watching a nice snow-related horror movie!

The trouble is, it’s always hard to decide which film to choose, so as ever, we at Love Horror have decided to do the work for you. We’ve found five horror films that are perfect to watch on a snowy day.

5 Horror Films for a Snowy Day

5. Frozen (2010)

Okay, so you think things are bad for you right now? You’re stuck indoors. Maybe you tried to make your way into work this morning and had to stand and wait for your train in the freezing cold before discovering that it wasn’t going to arrive.
I’d be mad too. But at least you weren’t stuck on a ski lift. That’s what happens in the 2010 film Frozen (starring the Ice Man himself, Shawn Ashmore – he must love the cold).
3 skiers become trapped near the top of a mountain after trying to use a ski lift on the cheap.
Soon it’s late and cold and they need to decide on their best chance of survival, to drop from the seat and risk serious injury and or death, or risk freezing on the lift waiting to be rescued.

4. The Shining (1980)

Possibly one of the best known snow films, The Shining demonstrates the dangers of staying in too long when the snow comes down.
Jack Torrance takes his family to an off season hotel when he’s employed to act as caretaker for the place.
It’s the perfect opportunity for him to work on his writing, or so he thinks. But before long Jack becomes troubled by haunted visions related to the hotel’s sinister past and he soon becomes a very angry and dangerous man indeed.
As he goes on a rampage, his wife and child are forced to fight for their survival in a place that’s about as remote and snowed in as you can get.

3. The Thing (1982)

We were kind of spoilt for choice here with The Thing from Another World (1951), The Thing (1982) and The Thing (2011) to choose from. But for this horror commentator, it’s 1982 Carpenter classic that best encapsulate that feeling of snowy seclusion and frost-bitten fear.
After defrosting an ancient alien being the inhabitants of a remote Antarctic base find themselves trapped with the savage creature that can take the form of any living thing.
It doesn’t get much more helpless than this. With any member of the party potentially being a killer in disguise the paranoia is uncontrollable.

2. Dead Snow (2009)

What’s worse than being trapped indoors with lots of snow outside? Why being trapped indoors with snow AND zombie Nazi’s outside of course.
When a group of young skiers take a trip to a remote cabin in some mountains they happen upon a stash of gold, which would usually be pretty awesome.
However, this gold happens to have belonged to the Nazi’s and in finding it, they wake a bunch of zombie soldiers that are eager to get revenge on the group. Cue gore, guns and snow themed zombie madness.
This frost filled film is sprinkled with a good measure of humour which complements the copious amounts of blood.

1. 30 Days of Night (2007)

Resigning yourself to the fact that you’re going to be snowed in for a while needn’t be a sad or scary thing as long as you have some home comforts.
But what if some nasty vampires come to town, cut the power and communications, then feast on you and your neighbours? It does happen… In films like 30 Days of Night that is.
Cut off from the rest of the world and with mother nature and the nasty vampires working against them, a small group of Alaskan townsfolk led by cop Eben (Josh Hartnett) strive to survive and prevent the vampire threat from spreading further.
With the cold, claws and razor-sharp canines against them the odds seem impossible. But apparently, if there’s one thing that Alaskans can deal with, it’s adversity.

And… Defrost

So, take your pick, grab yourself a cocoa, wrap up in a blanket and enjoy.
And until the snow clears, try to avoid ski lifts, cabin fever, alien creatures, Nazi zombies and blood thirsty vampires.
