300: Rise of an Empire was the brilliant and brutal follow up to Zack Snyder and Frank Miller’s 300. Described as a sequel, a prequel and an equal it takes before, during and after the events of the 300 Spartans detailing the Greek and Persian war in all its gory glory.
We managed to get a hold of a copy of the Blu-ray and delved into the myriad of features available to give you the run down on what this great release has to offer.
The 300 Effect – Broken into 4 parts all using interviews, clips and behind the scenes footage the 300 effect dissects and discusses the original movie and its influence on 300: Rise of an Empire. 3 Days in Hell talks about the many crossovers between the films with events and characters reappearing showing how you could in fact edit them both together into massive epic telling the complete story. Brutal Artistry talks about the extremely distinctive look of both films and how the sequel attempted to keep that style yet make a unique look for itself as well. A New Breed of Hero focuses on Sullivan Stapleton as Themistokles and his difference to Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas while Taking the Battle to the Sea goes in depth to the amazing sea battles that make up much of the new film.
Real Leaders & Legends – Perhaps the best feature this fascinating mini-documentary shows us the real people behind the characters with historians elaborating on the life and times of Themistokles, Queen Gorgo, Artemisia and Xerxes among others. Filmed at the actual locations historians and the films cast and crew talk about some of the real battles and stories behind key scenes in the film giving you a rich and much deeper understanding of the fascinating facts behind the fantastic fiction.
Women Warriors – Focusing on Lena Headey’s Queen Gorgo and Eva Green’s Artemisia this extra tells us all we ever wanted to know about the powerful women who more than dominate 300: Rise of an Empire both of which where very real and very powerful figures during the period.
Savage Warships – The Greek’s trireme is an iconic battleship which up until recently historians knew very little about. This extra shows how a team of boat enthusiasts and experts extensively researched the Trireme and rebuilt it proving that its 3 tier oar design could in fact function and paving the way for the special effects guys from 300 to up the accuracy of Rise of an Empire by using real working boat designs.
Becoming a Warrior – Last of all is a short piece on the masses of training involved for the cast of 300: Rise of an Empire to get in the peak of physical fitness and perform the grueling fight scenes and stunts the film is full of. After watching this you will never complain at the gym again!
Out now 300: Rise of an Empire told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster 300 is a new chapter of the epic saga which takes the action to a new battlefield – the sea. The story pits the Greek general Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces, ruled by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and led by Artemisia, the vengeful commander of the Persian navy. Knowing his only hope of defeating the overwhelming Persian armada will be to unite all of Greece, Themistokles ultimately leads the charge that will change the course of the war.
