Bachelor Party in the Bungalow of the Damned (2008)

0000215872 Film titles are important. The name of the film can either tell you everything about the movie your about to watch – Texas Chainsaw Massacre, American Werewolf in London – or absolutely nothing – MartinCube . Some are explicitly elucidatory – The Birds, The Fog – and others cryptically enticing – Halloween, The Evil Dead.

Bachelor Party in the Bungalow of the Dammed has a great title, funny, evocative and self-explanatory it has to be one of the best film names of the year. It’s just a pity the film itself never lives up to its majestic moniker.

As if you had to ask the plot revolves around a party being held in a bungalow in the Hampton’s owned by creepy Gordon (Joe Testa) bachelor08bungand organised by best man Sammy (Gregg Aaron Greenberg) to celebrate the impending nuptials of his best mate Chuck (Joseph Riker). As you may of guessed though this is no ordinary bungalow and things go from freaky to frightening when a trio of satanic strippers show up looking to take off their clothes and then take some souls.

Released by the indie horror film company Brain Damage films this is a low budget picture which is also sadly low on direction, value, ideas, scares and laughs. Brain Damage should be simultaneously commended for promoting first time horror directors and encouraging new content but castrated for seemingly having no quality control.

Lit badly with a terrible cheesy soundtrack and shot on cheap cameras with no artistic flair at all it appears the money has seemingly all gone on the special effects with varying success. Melting face make up and bloodied body parts look okay but the awful CGI looks like it was done on a Zx Spectrum.

The plot and script is basic, unoriginal and confused jerking between horror movie hokum, bad soft-core pornography and misogynistic, homophobic comedy none of which works. The Kevin Smith style dialogue falls flat when delivered by the badly written characters who look less like professional actors and more like the directors mates helping him out.

Ultimately it seems that first time writer, director and producer Brain Thomson is desperately attempting to evoke the 80’s gore fests of cult producer Lloyd Kaufman who appears in a very random cameo at the start of the film.

Kaufman’s Troma Movies where low on budget and high on titillation, violence and gore. They also had awsome titles – Toxic Avenger, Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. and Class of Nuke ‘Em High. They were always cheesy and entertaining and although they would never win awards for there quality they where unlike any other films at the time and had a heavy influence on many movies which followed them.

At 1 hour 12 minutes Bachelor Party in the Bungalow of the Dammed looks like a badly acted student homage to Troma aimed at prepubescent American boys into toilet humour. Hardly worth parting with any of your hard earned cash to see.

Maybe they should change the title to something more fitting like Crap Horror DVD in the Bargain Bin of the Supermarket.
