Chernobyl Diaries Film Causes Protests
The imminently released Chernobyl Diaries, a ghostly tale created by Oren Peli (of Paranormal Activity fame), has been met with protests.
The film which is released on 22nd June in the UK tells the fictional tale of a group of travellers who visit Prypiat, a town formerly occupied by workers at the plant.
The area is now deserted, but the group soon discovers that they’re not quite alone as something sinister starts to take them out one by one.
The film has met opposition from those that believe that it’s ‘sensationalising a disaster that had tragic human consequences’.
The disaster in 1986 was one of the largest nuclear incidents in human history. Vast areas surrounding the site are still heavily effected and many lives have been lost and ruined as a result of the radiation.
However, Peli insists that the film was never meant to offend and hopes that the film will help to highlight some serious issues in the area, particularly the plight of children that have been institutionalised in the area.
Chernobyl Diaries is released in the US this week and in the UK next month.
