Discopath (2013) Review

ghghDo you remember your school disco? Spending hours at home getting your clothes right, doing your hair and practicing how you were going to finally tell Suzy, your school crush, how you finally felt about her? Only to find out that your best friend had sneaked in there already and made his move before you’d even had a chance to stammer your words of amour! Frustrating wasn’t it? Imagine how life would be then for a native of the 70’s era, big fro’s, stuff up your nose, anything goes!!! Sounds fun doesn’t it? Or does it?

Our tale begins in the mid-70’s: a timid young New Yorker leads an uneventful life until he is fatally exposed to the pulsating rhythms of a brand-new genre of music: disco. Unable to control his murderous impulses that stem from a traumatic childhood experience, Duane Lewis transforms into a dangerous serial killer exiled to Montreal.

Yes, you are reading correctly: disco makes you kill. Don’t believe me? Then check out Discopath for proof that Disco was and still is the devil’s music. Groovy opening credits lead into our tale of Duane who appears to be normal to all around him. He has not had a good life, witnessing his father die at the hands of a mixing desk and amplifying speakers. It appears to have taken its toll on him both psychologically and mentally too. Bit like being subjected to The Spice Girls’ Wannabe for 24 hours, 7 days a week. You’d love the sound of disco for awhile but once it got lodged in your brain, it might make you lose control and Freak Out (Do you get what I did there?). Anyway, I digress. What takes place is basically Duane hooks up with a hot chick called Valerie, who appears to be attracted to Duane, because he is weird. Yes, because’s he’s weird I cry! There’s hope for all us weirdos yet!!!imgres

Duane and Valerie attend their local discotheque. Once Duane hears those fab fly groovy fresh sounds he turns into the killing machine we all knows and love. Valerie’s a goner and it’s not long before Duane hot trots off to Canada to live life under a new name as a janitor at an all girls school. The question is will he be able to withhold his insatiable lust for killing? Will he be able to avoid hearing disco in the 1970s and will he be able to find a groovy pair of flares and some supa-fly hair to match too? All these questions will be answered as usual if you watch the DVD!!!

What did you think of Discopath?

Watching Discopath really made me imagine that I was immersed in the 1970’s. It felt at times like I was breathing and eating the era whilst watching the action on screen. The director Renaud Gauthier has studied the decade well and this is captured in the surroundings, styling and manner in which the cast speak during the entire movie. The effects are low budget, but still achieve what they appear to be used for, which is to not only shock us but to make us laugh too.

Discopath does start off as a fairly straightforward horror, but halfway through it does appear that comedy is on the director’s mind. Particularly hauntingly visual was the moment Duane traps Valerie under the glass dance floor of the discotheque. We know Valerie is screaming for help and knows her time is up, but the patrons above her can’t hear her and don’t seem to notice the blood which is splattered under their dancing feet. There are other quite effective comedic moments in the film too, but I don’t want to spoil it too much for you, so suggest you check Discopath out yourselves!!!

Whilst I enjoyed the beginning half of the film, I became somewhat disappointed with it’s trajectory into comedy. Whilst, it’s quite obvious that Discopath is geared to a horror comedy audience, I believe the film would have benefited more from being an out and out horror, rather than veering off into the comedy zone. I was also somewhat disappointed with the ending and believe that there was more scope to develop Duane’s character in a villainous and evil way. There appears to be more to him than meets the eye, but this is not looked at in as much depth as I believe it should have been. If you love comedy horror, I am sure you are going to love Discopath, but for me, it ended too soon and left me with an “Is that it?” expression all over my face. I cried all over the dismembered body of my latest victim. Poor me.
