Love Horror: Tell us about your film?
Marco Rosson (director): Ours is an independent film as many but with a touch of craftsmanship as taught by the great Italian masters like Bava, Fulci and Argento. Surely it is a movie filled with our passion and with nostalgia for a certain type of movies that is rarely seen nowadays. Shanda’s River is a tribute to the genres which always fascinated us, but also a statement of love to the territory we live in. We could sum it up with a line taken from one of the cult movies we took inspiration from: “Do you believe in witches?”

Love Horror: How did you get into making horror movies?
Marco Rosson (director): My dream has always been to be able to shoot a movie. Ever since I was a teenager I took the camera in my hand and tried to create something with motion pictures. And so the first shorts and the first videoclips of independent bands were born. In 2011 I wanted to take the great leap into the feature film field: this is how New Order came to life. It’s a Sci Fi movie starring the legendary actor Franco Nero. The film was entirely written, directed and produced by me.

Giorgio Galbiati (producer): I met Marco at the Civic Film School of Milano and the idea of being able to shoot something together came to me after seeing his feature film debut. I liked the film so much and I also liked the independent and straight way of Marco to deal with the realization of such an important and challenging project. Since then there was the desire to create something together, something that would sink its roots into the classic horror genre made in Italy. After reading the screenplay by Shanda’s River written by Nicola Pizzi, our friend from the Cinema School period, we said it was the right way to start our collaboration in this field.

Love Horror: What is your view on horror in 2017 and how would you change it?
Marco Rosson (director): I would like young directors to confront traditional horror movies style. I would love to see something new with traditional effects and without any digital effects. Like master Sergio Stivaletti did in Dario Argento’s movies.

Giorgio Galbiati (producer): I look for originality in any field. That it is in the field of moviemaking rather than in any other field. I would like independent filmmakers to dare more and not just make the thousandth Texas Chainsaw Massacre clone. There are very few ideas and those ideas are often quite the same.

Love Horror: What is your favourite horror film and why?
Marco Rosson (director): Evil Dead by Sam Raimi because it completely changed my point of view not only in the horror film field but in film in general. It’s such a revolutionary work of low budget piece of art.

Giorgio Galbiati (producer): Suspiria, Deep Red and Four Flies on Grey Velvet by Dario Argento. 3 movies, 3 masterpieces. Everything is near to the perfection in it: music, light, actors, editing, direction, atmosphere. Simply great movies.

Love Horror: If Hollywood came knocking and gave you anything you wanted what movie would you make and who would it star?
Marco Rosson (director): I’d like to be able to make Fernando Di Leo’s Caliber 9 remake. It would take place in Los Angeles and I would name it L.A. Caliber 9. I’d love to work with Tim Roth, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. So I would need an astronomical budget to accomplish it. Hollywood calls, Rosson answers.

Giorgio Galbiati (producer): I would like to work with Uma Thurman and Michael Madsen whom I’ve been fan of for years. I’d like to make them play in a dramatic thriller. Or maybe in a crepuscular bullet ballet adrenaline action movie. It would be awesome.
