Dead by Daylight: The SAW Chapter Q&A

In multi-player survival horror Dead by Daylight you’re given a choice. Do you have the stealth, smarts, and discretion to be a Survivor? Or are you a Killer, thirsting for the blood and torment of your victims?

As a Survivor your primary objective is to escape the level… not so easy when the unstoppable Killer is always on the hunt. With a variety of Survivor and Killer characters to choose from, each with their own unique skills and abilities, and a selection of ever-changing maps, Dead by Daylight is a pulse-pounding nightmare you won’t want to escape from…

Enter the world of the hugely successful Saw series of films with this latest chapter from Dead by Daylight. They say that it’s good for the human race to solve puzzles, to make use of our highly developed brain. To get some of that “positive stress”. But there’s a limit. A lethal limit where blood gets involved and we create memories of something we would rather forget. The Pig is the puzzlemaster, and we are the test subjects… Offering a new Killer, Survivor and a Map, Dead by Daylight: The Saw Chapter is the terrifying new expansion that horror fans won’t want to miss.

Below the guys behind the game including the developer and producer tell all on  creating the Saw Chapter for Dead by Daylight –

This isn’t the first time you invite horror movie icons into Dead by Daylight. What makes the SAW chapter unique?

Every franchise has its unique twists loved by the fans. The team takes great pleasure in incorporating these twists into our universe as faithfully as possible. The Pigheads are interesting characters in the franchise since they use stealth and cunning to catch Survivors and bring them to Jigsaw’s games. More importantly, the ingenious traps are what make SAW so unique, so we made sure they had a central role in this new Chapter. This is a horror icon that we felt would lend itself well to fun gameplay.

Amanda Young is The Pig in the new SAW Chapter. Can you tell us what made you choose her?

We wanted to use a character who fits the core gameplay loop of hunting. The most notable character in the franchise, Jigsaw, doesn’t kill people; he always gives the survivors afair chance to get away. We had conversations with Lionsgate and the filmmakers about the characters they thought worked well, and this is the one we all got collectively excited about. Amanda as The Pig is the perfect character for the role, as she uses Jigsaw`s tools but doesn’t hesitate to bend his rules, to make sure the survivors are punished at the end.

The Pig’s power is iconic. Can you tell us more about it?

The Pig brings a new move to the Killer usual set: she can crouch and mute the Terror Radius, a heartbeat sound that survivors use to know if the Killer is around. From the crouched position, The Pig may launch a fast ambush attack. Thus she relies on stealth to approach and surprise survivors. The Pig also brings a very iconic tool to Dead by Daylight: the Reverse Bear-Traps. She can place Reverse Bear-Traps on Dying Survivors. The timer on the Bear-Trap starts ticking once a Generator is fired up, placing them in a really dire situation. A survivor with the Reverse Bear-Trap must find the right key in one of many Jigsaw boxes found around the map before the trap triggers and explodes their head.Twisted, butneat!

What were the challenges you faced in bringing the Pig as a new killer in Dead by Daylight?

The Traps! Ingenious traps are core to the franchise; their presence was a must for us from day though there were some design challenges. We went through several iterations and prototypes, some were either too powerful or too weak or just too hard to understand and would send us back to the drawing board. We were lucky to have the support of Lionsgate and the filmmakers in adapting SAW for our game; from everything from characters to the new use of traps, we eventually nailed it and successfully transposed the movies’ experience to the game. Being caught in the Reverse Bear-trap fills you with panic, yet its exciting! When it triggers and the death clock starts ticking, usually because of unknowing or selfish Survivors, the urgency adds to the already high stress of facing The Pig.

What made you choose Detective Tapp as the survivor of this chapter? What’s the best way to play with him?

We’re glad to finally have a homicidal detective in Dead by Daylight. Detective Tapp’s obsession with the Jigsaw case and the fact that he stays a good guy through and through makes him the perfect fit. His detective skills and determination are great additions to the survivor perks. Tenacity allows a dying survivor to crawl faster and recover at the same time. Detective`s hunch reveals the position of objectives for a limited time just after completing a generator`s repairs. And Stake Out is a build-up perk which rewards tokens for every 15 seconds standing in the killer`s proximity undetected. Each token transforms a good skill check into a great skill check. This build can be used to focus on objectives and will serve stealth playstyles the best.

What makes this map (Gideon Meat Plant) different?

In terms of layout and gameplay, this is the first 2-floor interior map. It’s completely different to anything we’ve done before, the maze-like layout and the porous quality of the two floors can be used strategically in many different gameplay styles. Jigsaw’s Hideout has a rich story, and you’ll see many different iconic rooms from the movies such as the bathroom, the freezer trap, the pig vat and more. The team worked hard with Lionsgate and Starbreeze to bring this new content out. As always, the new characters bring very different playstyles, new strategies to hunt and survive and most importantly new scary clutch moments. The SAW chapter is a lot of fun and we’re excited to see how these characters evolve within the community.
