Laura Gardner Interview
Love Horror: How did you get into SFX makeup?
Laura Gardner: With Halloween being my favourite time of year, a few years ago I wanted to try something a little different so I created a look using body paint and SFX makeup instead of buying a normal Halloween costume. With all the positive feedback I received from that, I decided to take up SFX Makeup and body painting as a hobby outside of my normal full time job to see where it goes. In the last year or so I have really got into it more seriously, making youtube tutorials and sharing my looks on social media.
What are the essential skills for an aspiring sfx makeup artist?
Passion, dedication, patience, imagination.
A lot of my ideas are inspired by events, such as Christmas – The Grinch, Halloween, New Years – Fireworks. As you can probably tell from a lot of my work, it’s very horror themed. So I also get inspiration from my favourite films and TV programs, such as my White Walker body paint from the popular TV Series Game Of Thrones and my Walter White face paint from Breaking Bad. I wanted to try something a bit different with my body painting this year, using music as an inspiration, such as my re-creation of the Bring Me The Horizon album cover for Count Your Blessings and the album cover for lInkin Park – Hybrid Theory.
Are you a horror fan and has this played a part in you persuing this career?
I am a massive horror fan! Horror plays a major part in a lot of my looks! I have even turned myself into my favourite horror characters, such as Freddy Kruger from Nightmare on Elm Street!
Who are your SFX idols?
MadeYewlook and Pinkstylist.
What are your ambitions?
SFX makeup is a hobby at the moment but I would love to make a career out of it one day! A crazy goal is to one day make it to working behind the scenes of Game of Thrones. But I guess it’s more of a dream at the moment.
And what kind of makeup creation will you be making for Halloween this year?
I have a lot of Halloween ideas that you can use yourself. Check out my Instagram for all updates. I also love taking requests, so if you would be to create or re-create a look for you just get in touch.
